MacEwan University’s School of Business is seeking applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Social entrepreneurship to build on the School’s strengths in social and emancipatory aspects of entrepreneurship that can support disadvantaged or marginalized communities, including its application in Indigenous Business. The successful applicant will receive a full-time, probationary tenure-track position (at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor) and may be rooted in any of the four departments in MacEwan University’s School of Business. The successful applicant will also serve as the Director of MacEwan’s School of Business Social Innovation Institute. Upon starting the academic appointment, the successful applicant will work with the University to apply for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair. In addition to establishing a research program, some teaching and curriculum development, and contribution to university service will also be a portion of the workload. The successful applicant will have a reduced teaching load in the initial years of the appointment.

Allard Hall on the MacEwan campus is home to the Roundhouse and the MacEwan University School of Business Social Innovation Institute (SII). The Institute is a hub for experts and start-ups in social innovation and social enterprise who share a commitment to positive change, to connect with community needs and challenges. The Institute convenes events that encourage social innovation and collaboration through engaging community partners for learning and research. Among the SII’s focus is an interest to understand and reduce the barriers to conducting business by disadvantaged and marginalized groups including but not limited to Indigenous peoples, immigrants and visible minorities, sexual and gender minorities, and persons living with disabilities. As Director of the SII, responsibilities will include leading the SII in meeting and growing its mandate, management of a small team, and budget oversight. The SII and the director role will add value to the successful applicant’s research and teaching programs and can help endeavors such as applying for external funding.

Candidates with experience or interest in pursuing research on Indigenous business will have many opportunities at MacEwan University. Edmonton has the second largest urban Indigenous population in Canada, and MacEwan University has many Indigenous business partners and many opportunities across Alberta to connect with Indigenous communities. Candidates will have:

  • a PhD or terminal degree in business, management, or related field;
  • evidence of outstanding teaching ability, and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching; and,
  • an active program of original and innovative academic research in social or emancipatory entrepreneurship, social enterprises, and/or Indigenous business, or a related field and evidence of a research program and research productivity.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching dossier (including your teaching philosophy and recent teaching evaluations), and statement of research interests. The cover letter should indicate with which School of Business department the applicant’s teaching and research interests would best align. As an additional note from the Canadian Research Chair Program, “applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.”
